Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017, and quickly became the top-streamed track within 6 months. The song is a blend of pop music and reggaeton not only brought renewed interest to reggaeton, but also brought attention towards Latin music more generally. The Billboard Top 100 featured two songs that were Spanish mostly, and four songs in the year the year 2016. However, during the heights of Despacito's fame in 2017 there were 19 predominantly Spanish songs that were included in the top 100. In 2020, the number was 41. Justin Bieber re-mixed Despacito with a Spanish-language version in 2017. In the year following, famous artists started working together with reggaeton groups. Drake teamed with Bad Bunny to produce MIA (2018), while Madonna collaborated on Medellin together with Maluma (2019). The year 2000 saw a number of reggaeton performers were lamenting its inclination towards mainstream but a new generation of performers, including Rauw Alejandro, aimed to ensure that reggaeton was evolving. Rauw Alejandro incorporated elements of other styles and electronic music.
